AMV Competitions FAQ

General Questions

What is an AMV?
AMV is short for Anime Music Video. You can create your own music video for a chosen song using Anime, Manga, (fan)art and game footage (the game must be of Japanese origin), but keep in mind that AMVs are focused on “anime” and “music”. The music can be of any source (Japanese or otherwise).

So the music choice is free?
Yes, you are free to choose the music you like. It can be in any language and of any genre. Please do note that if your submission contains 18+ language you may only enter in the 18+ AMV Competition.

Can I use footage from more than one anime/game/manga?
There is no limit to the number of sources you are allowed to use in your AMV.

Can I use more than one song (either from the same artist or even different artists) in my AMV?
There is no limit to the number of songs you are allowed to use in your AMV.

What content is not allowed in my AMV?
Excessive violence, graphic depictions of blood and injuries, nudity, gore and other content not suitable for minors is not allowed in the AMV and the International AMV Competition. Ecchi (light fanservice) is allowed within certain boundaries. The same applies to song lyrics. If you are not sure if something is allowed, you can check by contacting our AMV team through e-mail.

The 18+ AMV Competition does allow graphic content, Dutch law permitting (no minors or bestiality). We allow violence, gore, blood, and nudity. We do draw a line: we do not allow sources depicting extreme fetishes, extended depictions of torture, brutal murder, gruesome surgical depictions and other content commonly associated with snuff films. For the exact rules, please consult the 18+ AMV Competition page. If in doubt, please contact our AMV team through e-mail.

Can my AMV have an intro/outro?
Yes it can, but the intro and/or outro may not contain any form of credits (such as music used/anime used/title of the amv/etc.). A title card will be added by us for the convention. You are allowed to add a “special thanks” screen.

Technical Questions

What type of video codecs can I use?
You can use one of the following codecs without problems: DivX, XviD, H.264, MPEG. Using different codecs might result in playback problems on our side, so please send us an e-mail beforehand if you are planning on using a different codecs from the ones listed above.

Widescreen or 4:3?
Our LED Screen is 1080p Full HD. It will therefore project at this resolution (1920×1080). Widescreen has our preference at a resolution of 1920×1080 (1080p) or 1280×720 (720p). We do accept 4:3.

Which frame rate do you prefer me to use?
We recommend you to use either 23,976 or 29,970 fps. By default anime is either 23,976 or 29,970fps. To prevent technical issues such as frame blending, please make sure that the settings of your editing software match the settings of your anime source.

What is frame blending?
Frame blending is frames blurred together technically (also known as ghosting). Here is an example: http://amvnews.ru/images/news/mistakes/04.jpg

How do I avoid frame blending?
This depends on which program you’re using. In Vegas you can remove frame blending by setting Smart resample to Disable Resample for each fragment of the video. You can do this by right clicking on every fragment, then go to switches and there you will be able to find the disable resample option.

Frame blending can also occur due to deinterlacing. This usually means that the video wasn’t deinterlaced properly.

Can I send in an AMV I used in another AMV contest?

I entered with an AMV but changed my mind and made another. Can I change my entry?
You can submit a new entry as long as the deadline has not passed. Once the deadline has passed, your entry is finalized and cannot be changed.

Will you point out critical mistakes to me, such as missed logo’s or bad encoding, so I still have a chance to fix this before the deadline?
Our AMV team will point out these flaws. It’s up to you whether you would like to change it or not. If you decide to send an updated version make sure to send it before the deadline.

What will you do with my AMV?
All AMVs that reach the final round will be shown on our main stage during the competition. Your AMV may also be used for promotional purposes (e.g. showcased at our promotion booth at other events), but we will not make the AMV available for download or online viewing. A link to an online source owned by the original maker or with their consent, such as YouTube or Vimeo, will be provided on our website after the convention if available.
