EuroCosplay Dutch Preliminaries

Abunai! 2019 will host the Dutch preliminaries for the EuroCosplay Finals, to be held in the United Kingdom on October 25th, 2019 at London MCM Comic Con.

In this competition you will be judged on your costume. It is not an act competition and it is not possible to enter with a duo or group. The competition will take place Saturday August 24th.

Please read the rules below carefully.

EuroCosplay Qualifier Requirements:

In order to quality for the EuroCosplay Dutch preliminaries you must be:

  1. at least 18 years old on 25th of October 2019.
  2. a registered citizen or permanent resident of the Netherlands for at least three years.
  3. not directly involved with the organisation of Abunai!.
  4. be eligible to travel to the United Kingdom.

We will ask you for proof after your entry has been received. If we do not receive proof that you meet the requirements, we will disqualify you.

General Rules:

  • You have to be in possession of a valid Abunai! 2019 ticket to sign up for this competition.
  • Each Finalist will be on stage for a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of 2 minutes. This does not include stage preparation time.
  • Presentations with inappropriate language, nudity or intense violence will be rejected without question.
  • Anything that makes the stage dirty or slippery that cannot be cleaned up quickly is forbidden. Dust, powder, and glitter are not allowed on stage. Paper or fabric scraps are suggested alternatives.
  • Energetic performances such as running, martial arts, etc. will require proof of skill of the performers. We reserve the right to interrupt performances because of safety reasons.
  • Fireworks, smoke or any items that cause an open flame or explosion are not allowed.
  • Providing us with as much material as possible in the template will give us a better idea of your act.  This will influence the approval process.
  • The entries will be reviewed and the best will be selected to compete. We will inform you if you made it to the selection round.
  • You have to ask our permission beforehand if you want someone to take your pictures during the show.
  • Videos are not accepted for this competition.

Costume Rules

  • Costumes must be from an officially published or broadcast source. The following are not allowed:
    • original designs.
    • based on fan art or other fan works.
    • combining aspects of multiple characters. This includes props not belonging to the character you’re cosplaying as.
    • gijinka, meaning human form interpretations of non-human characters.
    • costumes based on bands, musicians and drag acts.
  • You must have made your costume yourself. However, you are allowed to incorporate store-bought wigs, shoes and glasses in your costume. It is not allowed to have someone else commission or customize these items.

At the Convention: Rehearsal Rules and Judging Session Information

  • Please be aware that if during the Abunai! weekend you find yourself unable compete, the ONLY way to notify us is by visiting the information desk. If you know you’re unable to compete before the convention weekend, please let us know by email before Tuesday August 20th!
  • If you have a legitimate reason for missing rehearsal or for being late, you must let us know no later than a week after you receive the rehearsal schedule. If you fail to inform us of this on time you will be put on the blacklist, which will prevent you from entering the competition the next year.
  • The rehearsal is not for you to practice your act, but for the technical crew to make sure the sounds and lights are working correctly and to practice technical queues.
  • We do not accept new audio material or requests during the rehearsal.
  • Please bring your most recent files to the rehearsal.
  • The costume judging session will take place before the competition is held.
  • At the judging session you must provide pictures from the source material of the costume as a reference for the official appearance of the character they are cosplaying. Bringing construction or progress pictures is encouraged but not required.

At the Convention: Competition Rules and Information

  • By participating in this competition you permit us to record the act during the performance. The rights to this recording will belong to Abunaicon and the Abunai Foundation and may be used for promotional purposes.
  • If you want your act to be filmed by anyone else besides our camera crew, you can request this through email up to a week before the convention.
  • There will be a short break between the rehearsal and the actual competition.
  • All participants must be present backstage 30 minutes before the show is scheduled to start. You are not allowed to leave. If there are delays, you are still required to be present!
  • The order in which the acts will perform is decided by the staff and is not open to discussion.
  • Judging results are final and are not open to discussion.

Dates & Deadlines:

You need to fill in the sign-up template before the 30th of June. By this date you have to submit your sign-up template, script, and audio-visual materials.

  • The entrants who made the selection round will be informed around the 10th of July.
  • We do not accept changes to the script in the review round. After the selection round, the selected groups may send in an updated script until the 1st of August. We only allow minor updates, not a completely different script.
  • Providing us with as much material as possible in the template will give us a better idea of your act. This will influence the approval process.
  • We will inform you of the time and place of the rehearsal by the 12th of August. By this date we will also inform you of the judging session’s time and place.
  • If you cancel your act after the 7th of August without a legitimate reason, your submission to the Eurocos competition for the next time will be put on the waiting list.

Sign-Up Rules

A script template will be sent to you after you have signed up. Scripts that do not follow these rules will be rejected.

  • You can sign up through the EuroCosplay 2019 sign-up form, which you can find below.
  • You need to fill in both your real name and your character’s name in the “Character(s) (required)” field in the template below.
  • There is a limited amount of places available. Therefore we advise you to send us your full information as soon as possible. This allows us to more quickly examine your act and determine which acts will make it through the selection round. We will also be quicker in informing you if you need to fix something in your sign-up template.
  • You must completely fill in the template’s section for props and equipment. This includes items such as chairs and tables.
  • We expect you to tell us at what time you want your lights to go on or off. Put clear technical cues into the script. See explanation in the sign-up form.
  • Pictures can only be submitted for clarification of your act.
  • You can send the script template back by in one go as either a .zip or .rar file, or you can upload the files usingwww.wetransfer.com or other archive websites, like Dropbox or Google Drive. You can then send us the download link.
  • You will have to send us your files again in the same fashion if you have to update a script or wish to adjust your audio after the selection round!
  • Your files should be named in this manner: Name – Cosplay name – script 1. Script 1 can be updated to Script 2 and will make it clear to us when it is updated.
  • We will notify you if your sign-up has been received.
  • Only visitors with a valid Abunai! ticket may enter this competition.

Audio Rules

  • Audio is not mandatory.
  • You must provide your own music and any pre-recorded dialogue.
  • If you do a ‘live’ performance, let us know before the deadline of the submission. We are unsure how many microphones we will have available so keep this in mind. We recommend pre-recording your act to avoid mistakes on stage during the show. If you want to make sure we know that you have a ‘live’ performance, please state it in your file name ( Name – Cosplay name – script 1- Live act)
  • For audio you can use one of the following file formats: MP3, AAC
  • Audio files should be of very good quality. The speakers will make it sound grainy otherwise.
  • Compressed bit rate for MP3 should be at least 128 kb/s, fixed, or 192 kb/s VBR. Compressed bitrate for AAC should be at least 96 kb/s.
  • Don’t use recordings of TV audio, unless you’re an expert who knows how to cancel out noise.
  • If you want to have audio start at X seconds / minute(s)you have to edit the file yourself. We start audio from the start, so make sure the file is silent until the moment you wish to use the audio in your act.
  • You have until two weeks before the convention to notify us of issues. Notifying us of updates and fixes counts for this as well.
